PfSense 2.1.3 on 512MB media has been discontinued?
-
Hi,
I have tried almost all the mirrors and can't seem to download the 512MB versions of pfSense 2.1.3. Many of the Alix 2D3 I've setup were sold w/ 512MB CF cards… Has it been discontinued?

Yes. It didn't have enough space to upgrade anymore and hasn't for a while so it was discontinued.

I'm sure many may still be using the 512mb CF card that came w/ their Alix and have a slot cut in it for easy re-flashing without the need to upgrade…
I hate having to buy new CF cards for "old" hardware... Is it possible for the developers to create a 512mb image with a "...nanobsd_no-upgrade..." tag in its file-name?
Thanks!

How exactly would you install it? If you're going to remove the card to flash in your computer then you might as well just get a new card. A 4GB card on Amazon will run you about $10 shipped.

I often find upgrading thru the Webgui can be troublesome and just upgrade by simply by saving the configuration file or just follow my "hard copy backup" of the configurations…. Afterwards using a USB card reader/writer to write the install image onto it, then reboot. It is just like the initial install of pfSense. Usually, I buy my stuff locally, which is a bit more expensive, but returns are a cinch, etc... I'm just trying to stretch every dollar... :)

I've never had an issue upgrading through the web interface. Then again, I've never used a 512MB card.
If you're concerned about spending some cash on a device you might not be able to use on your next system then try a small USB drive (or a Micro SDHC card with a small reader) that you could reuse.

I sure WISH I could use the two USB port but it's an Alix 2D3 board… Somehow, the BIOS only allows booting from CF card... Anyone knows of a workaround... :(

Hmm… That's a good point. I'm not sure the Alix can boot from USB. Sorry, bad suggestion then.

you may build your own image. here is a post about building custom images:

Since they sill have not removed the "download" selection menus for the 512MB image from their Download page… I had wrongly thought it was still available somehow...
I noticed someone else at the pfSense 2.1.3 Blog was also asking for it... It would have been great if it was somehow offered on its download mirrors in a separate directory with a text file stating its limitations and inability to use upgrades...
