Others charging for pfSense?
-
So I clicked an advert on the forums for a vendor I hadn't heard of before, and browsed around a little. I'm not sure if I'm missing something, but it looks like they're charging $900 for an OVF with pfsense pre-installed… Though I guess you do get 1 year of their support :-.

They are charging for support, not for pfSense itself since you can just download it for free anyway from pfsense.org. What is the problem with that?
-
The problem is that you can download the ISO yourself and then sign up for a year of support for $500. Even buying a hardware router and then buying support would cost the same or less than this "deal".

Yeah, well you can argue as much as you want about the pricing of support whether it's ok or not but they are not charging money for pfSense itself as the title of the thread claims.
-
But they sell an appliance for the same price, and with the same support… So in one scenario the support is basically "free" but in the virtual appliance it's not. A bit conflicting and a little shady.

Netgate is in a unique position where they can do custom images. I'm sure they put work into optimizing the image. If you don't like it, then roll your own. What's the problem?
