High Latency issues on Verizon FIOS
-
Hello pfSense community,
I recently replaced the FIOS router with a PC running pfSense. Things seemed to go well for a while but, recently I've been experiencing high latency, and connection dropouts. I am currently using a Dell Optiplex. My second NIC is an Asus Realtek RTL8168. Right now, I am currently running the base install of pfSense.Thank you for your time,

Do you see anything out of the ordinary when you look at Status - RRD Graphs - Quality?

Yep, I see the latency spikes in the RRD. I have attached a screenshot of my current RRD 1 day average.

Realtek NICs are crap. I wouldn't be surprised if it was the root cause of your problems, but it could also be your ISP. Hard to say without more testing. My link has a higher latency that yours but almost no packet loss, whereas yours had a max 6+%.

So, after some worsening packet loss, and longer downtime periods, I decided to contact Verizon. They are blaming poor cable installations between the ONT and my router. I've already re-terminated one end, but I'm not too convinced that the chord would causes such an issue. If the chord was damaged, i'm pretty sure I'd be experiencing other issues. Also, I decided to pick up an Intel NIC to replace the PoS Realtek one.

Realtek NICs are not a preferred choice but they're not that bad. I'd be surprised if an Intel NIC fixed this. (I've been wrong though!)
This didn't occur when you first installed pfSense? How do your ping times correlate to bandwidth usage? My gut reaction here is that Verizon changed their traffic shaping somehow and this is the result.
Changing out cables (any that you can) is a relatively easy test so try that first.Steve

Have you tried temporarily replacing the pfsense router with the old verzion router and seeing of you still have latency problems? Could be useful as a way to rule out ISP/ONT/cabling issues.
