Hardware for asterisk
-
Hey guys, I plan on setting up and playign with asterisk here, any recommendations on the hardware I will need for my pfsense box?

Has no CPU demand for a couple of extensions. VIA C7 CPU first, Atom CPU second, both didn't even feel that there's an Asterisk running.

we run the ESF and Netgate VoIP pbxs on FW-7541s with SSDs.
They don't even flinch.

Depending on how many simultaneous calls you're talking about you can get by with a lot less. My phone system at home runs off an Alix (Askozia).

but you don't run two businesses on that.

Nope, wouldn't think of it, I'd guess that it probably maxes out at 5 or 6 simultaneous calls. When I was using Switchvox (commercial, user-friendly version of Asterisk) I went through 4 hardware upgrades before I finally migrated off to Shoretel. The last was a pair of Dell R610 servers (cold spare) that had no issues with 60-70 calls, all of which were recorded. They've since been repurposed for XenApp/XenDesktop.

I plan on only having one simultaneous call. but I would like to be able to answer this from a softphone on one device, and transfer to a softphone on another device if needed. I also want to keep the possibility of unplugging and reverting back to an analog system when needed.

How many simultaneous calls do you need? How many extensions?Just re read your post . . . sorry
In general as others have said Asterisk does not need much. I run about 20 extensions and 5-6 calls at once on an old athlon single core from 2007. For one call, Asterisk only, a rasberry pi will work, so with pfsense an atom or alix should work fine at home. The thing with asterisk that uses cpu cycles is if you are doing transcoding and most likely you will not need to do that. -
I've got a spare server I plan to use that is already running pfsense as my firewall.
My question is what PCI card is needed so that I can plug my analog line in and do the trunking on pfsense.
