I am using an ALIX embeded pfsense 2.0.1 appliance with 3 NICs (WAN, LAN and OPT1) and 1 wireless adapter (WLAN).  I have configured WLAN in bridge with LAN, and set up the appliance as an Access Point - I tested with my iphone for example, and I get a DHCP lease fine.

The problem I have is that when the LAN NIC is disconnected, the WLAN connection also drops.  Looks like pfsense turns off the LAN adapter when the cable is unplugged, which affects the bridged adapter.  The WLAN adapter is configured without an IP (since it is bridged), and DHCP is given by the LAN adapter.

Assuming for example that I want to use pfsense with wireless devices only, is there anything I can do to fix this situation?  Lets forget about dodgie fixes such as plugging a crossover cable between the LAN interface and the OPT1 (not in use) interface.  Surely there is a way of getting this working.

That's always been the case. If the interface with the IP address configured upon it goes down, then the bridge goes down.

The fix is to assign the bridge interface and make the bridge interface your LAN interface, so it has the IP address on it, and your wired lan and wireless lan interfaces would be assigned separately with no IP address on them.

Search around the forum, it's been covered many times.
