      Hi again!

Whenever I try to access my boxes via ssh (out-of-the-box, port 22 etc…) I find a "#" in the console and only after entering "exit" and ENTER I see the usual output with the menu for pfSense.

What is running that I have to exit?

      Thanx in advance!

'Out of the box' SSH should be disabled. Assuming you enabled it, what user are you logging in with?

And do you see the "#" only when you connect to the real (serial?) console?

I get a "#" on the serial console sometimes and assume some garbage on the line has induced it dropping from the menu. But you should never get that when logging in over the network with ssh.

@Stephen: Sorry, you are right, my update was wrong, it's not port 22, it's always COM1, serial port… So: no user, just starting putty at COM1.

@Phil: I never use anything else but a serial cable to access the box other than via https.

What bothers me is that I have to enter "exit" to get to the "*** Welcome to pfSense 2.1.5-RELEASE-nanobsd (i386) on ...." screen. That's not normal,or? What am I exiting there?

I need the console maybe once a month (or less), when Snort dies silently (process not running anymore, some "exiting on event 11" in the system log) and manual restarting Snort sometimes freezes the box. I tried to reproduce the effect now, but the normal welcome screen was there... strange.

I got the "#" once today on a 2.2-BETA system. I was moving my cable back and forth between 2 systems, 1 at 9600 baud and 1 at 115200 baud, and stopping "putty" and running it again at the other speed… I am guessing that some random-looking character when I have putty set to the wrong speed for the box I am connected to is effectively sending a control character for me without me asking. e.g. if you press ctrl-C at the menu it drops to the "#" prompt, then type "exit" to get back to the menu.

The fact that typing exit brings up the menu implies the console had previously reached the menu. There have been some reports of the serial console stopping at the # prompt before the menu appears.
Is this box in some way more vulnerable to interference on the serial line? Plastic enclosure? Excessively long header cable?

Do you leave the cable attached? An un-terminated serial line can pick up noise easily.
