I would highly recommend getting a Gold Subscription.  $99 gets you the Definitive Guide, as well as access to the monthly Hangouts and the archived videos of previous Hangouts.

        http://pfsense.org/donate.html

I even have it in my sig, but seems now it redirects to https://www.pfsense.org/get-involved/index.html which I don't see any just donate link anymore, time to change my sig I guess  :(

There are no longer any donation options, we encourage you to check out our various offerings @ store.pfsense.org and/or our gold subscription.

Whats wrong with accepting money from mystery investors who want no ties back to themselves?

Isnt that what donations are?  ;)

I also would encourage you to buy a gold subscription - lots of late night reading material in the book, and the hangouts, and auto config backup, if you want to use that.

Amazon wishlists? I remember a few of the devs had linked to theirs sometime ago. Nice way to give back directly I always thought.

Yeah we used to have a list on the website (one or two complete re-designs ago), but that type of thing dates to the early days of the project, before all the key people were making a living solely from the project. I think that's great for smaller projects where it's a hobby for the person. That's a nice token of appreciation for spending some nights and weekends on something. Amazon wishlists don't make payroll though.

Yes, I did dredge that up from the depths of my memory somewhere.  ;)
And, yes, it doesn't help ESF or the project in general. It did seem nice that you could thank an individual for some particularly nice piece of work. The gift certificates are a good idea though, I never thought of that.

I used to have my wishlist linked in my sig here, but over time it looked tackier and tackier (for me) so I removed it. I don't think I ever had anyone actually use it, though, outside of a couple bounties I did before I started working here full time.

It's one of those things that's nice in theory but these days it's best to get the money into the project/company directly via sales.

                          Hi all,

While the pfSense project once accepted donations, we no longer do. Indeed, some similar projects ask for donations, we instead ask that, if you are inclined to donate to pfSense, that you instead donate to the FreeBSD Foundation.

For 14 years, the FreeBSD Foundation has been providing funding and support for the FreeBSD Project and community worldwide. They are fully funded by donations from supporters like you as well as organizations such as: VMware, NetApp, Tarsnap, Cavium, Xinuos, Netgate and others.

For more information, check out our blog post on the topic.

As always, thank you for the endless support.
