      Hi all!

I hope I am in the right place for my question? Since a couple of weeks I am facing the problem that my pfSense is offline for a couple of minutes not responding on pings and can't open the administration interface.

I am pinging on the …

      • pfSense IP (192.168.1.254) and no response
      • 8.8.8.8 and no response
      • other local machine 192.168.1.2 and I receive a response

      My configuration is ...

      Version:
      2.0.1-RELEASE (i386)
built on Mon Dec 12 19:00:03 EST 2011
      FreeBSD 8.1-RELEASE-p6

      Platform:
      nanobsd (512mb)

      NanoBSD Boot Slice:
      pfsense0 / ad0s1

      CPU Type
Geode(TM) Integrated Processor by AMD PCS

Additionally I am using two separate networks (one private and one public with captive portal).

For me it looks like that the pfSense it rebooting automatically because of the shown uptime, just 4 minutes? But I haven't rebooted it?

I am really lost, I have no idea what the problem is or what it is causing?

      Thank you,
      Rodney

What does your system logs show?
Running any packages and have you considering upgrading to remove any bugs from the underlying OS found since 2012?
        Maybe its faulty hardware?

          Hi firewalluser!

          Thank you for your response.

The system logs are showing always the same things …

Nov 26 10:23:00 getty[34247]: getty: unknown gettytab entry 'default'

          Nov 26 10:23:00 getty[34247]: tcsetattr /dev/console: Operation not supported

Installed packages are "freeradius2" and "OpenVPN Client Export Utility" but I am not really using freeradius2.

I was guessing that the hardware could be faulty because it was running properly for the last years. How can I figure out that it is the hardwares problem?

          Thank you,
          Rodney

I would take a backup, install 2.1.5 clean (don't upgrade) and restore the backup.  If it keeps crashing it's probably time for new hardware.

Like what derelict said, SD cards have a finite life which might be worth swapping over with a newer one, but these link might also be relevant.

                  Hej!

So I have replaced now my CF card with a new one and it still has the same behaviour like mentioned in my first post. It reboots every now and then (like minimum every hour once).

So I guess it is a problem with the hardware alix-board. What do you recommend as a replacement … my setup is ...

                  • one guest wlan (with captive portal)
                  • one private lan/wlan (where NAS, network printer, ...)

... and additionally I want to setup VPN, radius-server (for VPN authentication, wireless network authentication and NAS authentication) and a proxy

                  Thanks,
                  Rodney
