I'm using a rackmount Intel Atom box from http://www.logicsupply.com/fw100r/.

      2 x 1.6Ghz CPUs + 1GB RAM + 4 LAN ports + plenty of HDD space.
      PfSense v2.1.5 Release (i386)

I had been successfully using UML295 as my backup WAN.  Recently I had to send my old UML295 modem, which was working perfectly for 6+ mo, to our branch office (they also have a pfsense f/w).  Instead I've ordered a new one and just received it a few days ago.  I configured it exactly the same as the old one (triple checked it bit by bit).  I went to status_interfaces.php then clicked Connect.  It's showing the following for the newly added interface.

      VZNBROADBAND interface (ppp0)
      Status up
      PPP
      Uptime 00:00:0
      MAC address 00:00:00:00:00:00
      IPv6 Link Local xxxx::xxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxxxx
      In/out packets 0/0 (0 bytes/0 bytes)
      In/out packets (pass) 0/0 (0 bytes/0 bytes)
      In/out packets (block) 0/69 (0 bytes/5 KB)
      In/out errors 0/0
      Collisions 0

I noticed there was no IPv4 address, nor gateway IP.  The old UML modem is still working great at our branch office.

PPP log is showing the following:

When I compare these to those generated by our old modem when it starts up, the only difference seems to be the "IFACE: ioctl(ng17, SIOCSIFNAME): File exists" (highlighted in red).  If I'm reading the logs correctly, the modem seems to be connecting and is even able to successfully obtain a valid public IP address (100.x.x.x) assigned by Verizon.

I even tried a cleaner approach by removing the old interface settings, PPP settings, gateway settings (tied to the old verizon interface), and even any and all f/w rules associated with them.  And for some reason I can't seem to get this new UML295 to connect.  I also tested the modem by directly connecting it to my laptop and was able to connect to the internet and even got the same public 100.x.x.x IP address from Verizon.  I googled the "IFACE: ioctl(ng17, SIOCSIFNAME): File exists" error but wasn't able to troubleshoot any further due to my lack of freebsd/pfsense knowledge.

Any suggestion on what I should do next to troubleshoot this issue?  Any suggestion or input would be appreciated!!

After beating my head against the wall for several days, I finally found a solution.  Wait for it…..........reboot!  Rebooting the f/w fixed my issue and now the new modem is working as well as the old one.

Why do people complain before rebooting?  Its trouble shooting 101.
