I have used pfsense on my Alix alix2d13 for many years now and it has been great.  Currently though I have a old dlink router setup in access point mode to facilitate wireless.  Not only is this cumbersome it takes many more watts to run.

I run the newest version of pfsense and always keep it up to date.  I'd really just love to find a minipci card that just works without much tinkering. I'm a Linux admin so I mean it's not too much work but I'd rather have minimal troubleshooting.

I know many people say pick an Atheros and that's fine but what model? I think having up to wireless G is most important for speed.

I also have a raspberry pi sitting here and I very well may consider making it the access point with a wifi dongle.  Let me here your thoughts.

I have KIT-ALIX-5004MP-DUAL from Netgate in Alix 2D13 - 2 in remote offices that have needs to use minimum power and 1 in my home so I can test before upgrading remote offices. They have worked fine with 2.1.n and are now all running 2.2-RC with no problem. The whole kit ends up costing more than buying a vanilla AP, but if power is the issue and the Alix is located appropriately in a small home-office then having a card in the Alix can be good.
The kit (with card, cables, antennas) doesn not seem to be on Netgate any more, but I'm sure you can order all the parts separately - http://store.netgate.com/5004-MP-ATHEROS-4G-CM9-80211abg-miniPCI-Card-P125.aspx

        Also there is http://store.netgate.com/ALIX-Kits-C34.aspx

If you are looking for a supported card with miniPCI then I would get this card.

I don't think there is any 'N' support for that card though the hardware is capable of it.

Not even if you use the new 2.2 beta?  I have N working with 2.2 with a different card.

Seems to indicate it does support 802.11N but I'm sure I read somewhere it doesn't support anything faster than 54Mbps. Hmm.
