Question about dual port network card.
-
It seems that all the 1000mbps dual port network cards that I've come by are PCIe X4 How much performance would I loose if I put an X4 card in an X1 slot? My modem will give me about 24Mbps. Would an X4 card even work in an X1 slot? The slot on my ITX board is full lengeth but the specs say it's only X1

1 PCIe lane is sufficient for 2Gbps even for PCIe 1.0.
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express#History_and_revisions
You can get 1X to 4X PCIe adapters. Is the slot or the board actually 1X? I have seen slots that are 4X is size but only have 1 lane enabled.http://www.startech.com/PCI-Express-x1-to-Low-Profile-x16-Slot-Extension-Adapter~PEX1TO16
Since the additional lanes are just further contacts on the card/slot you can in fact just modify a smaller slot to allow a larger card to fit and it will use only the lanes that connect. Or modify the card as shown here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dvxcnfx3Bm0 I don't recommend you do that though! ;)
If you are connecting the card to a 24Mbps WAN then you won't loose anything.

While the slot is a full length 16X size physically, the specs say it's only 1 lane. So it should work no problem! that's too bad i like to saw and file things ;D
