OMG. Install the damned thing on the virtual drive! There is nothing to rescue when there's nothing installed… You have no config.xml, you need to redo everything from scratch obviously.
First thing, calm down.
I'm trying to understand why I lose my configuration when I power down pfSense. I was told that I shouldn't lose it. Therefore, I powered down, and it appeared as though I lost my whole configuration - but I wasn't sure.
Therefore, I was going through the process that might allow me recover my configuration.
So, why don't you relax. If my questions annoy you walk away.
If you gonna help then help, but if you're going to be rude then why bother reply?

You lost your config because pfsense was never installed.
Once you install, you should be well on your way.
You will have to reconfigure it again after install but the install will be retained from then on if you do it correctly.
Then CMB will be RIGHT!!!

Look, I had a fully functioning pfSense firewall with the configurations shown in the image.
I asked the question, if I power down the firewall will I lose all of those configurations. The answer that came back was no.
I powered it down and everything has gone. I'm trying to ensure that before I reconfigure I'm able to recover if the device is powered down.

No, you cannot recover anything from your NONEXISTENT install. You know, the one that did run from RAM only, because, like… you NEVER installed it. Sorry, never figured out that someone might think they'll get configuration saved on live CD. Now, move on and read some install docs.

The pfSense is installed on a VMware ESXi host.

Dude, you are booting from the darned LiveCD and you clearly never installed anything.
Booting from ISO is NOT install!

Live boot is what you did - Live boot isn't an install.
The reason CMB answered the way he did is because he was assuming you had some small level of knowledge on pfsense at least, like you have to install it if you want to keep settings between boot. Seriously, not one of us would have thought you would do a big configuration on a live boot.
But, now that we are all clear - Just install it. Then if you have more questions, ask. If you do something extremely silly, I can't guarantee no one will joke with you, but you will probably get a good answer, like you did this time (-;

You already did that.
Now you need to press "I", follow the install direction, then after unmount the ISO so that it NO LONGER boots from ISO and then it should boot from your install.
(It is rather odd that someone could even get a virtual environment running without knowing this. Thats why doktornotor thinks you might be trolling us)

Followed your rational instructions and pfSense is installed. I can reboot and settings remain intact.

Just so you're aware I deal with 100s of users each day and I'm often asked the most ridiculous questions, but there is virtue in trying to put yourself in their shoes.

There's also virtue in not screaming "WRONG" at the founder of the site you're on and software you're using, who's spent the past 10+ years at this, co-wrote the highly-regarded book on it, presented at conferences around the planet on it, etc. And, of course, I was exactly right. You were running off the live CD and had no storage medium to store the config.
How people treat you on online forums is generally a reflection of how you've treated them and approached the thread in general. When you start a thread off yelling "WRONG" at the correct answer, generally things not going to go so well for you. It's pretty clear you should know you were in a bit over your head and should have asked for clarification.

Yes, this exactly. I was leaning towards a troll at that point in the thread too.
