2.2 Upgrade on Firebox - Kernel panic during package installation
-
Hi all,
I'm running into a bit of a problem on my Firebox after upgrading to 2.2.
My firebox x750e was running fine, on 2.1, but seems to panic on 2.2 during package installation. I first noticed when Freeradius wasn't working anymore, and I decided to reinstall the package. The box would just keep rebooting, and continued generating panics. Only 'deleting' the partially installed package would stop the box from attempting to reinstall the package after each crash. My config is slightly non-standard, as I'm booting from a SATA drive. (https://forum.pfsense.org/index.php?topic=78012.0)
The panic log tells me I'm getting a 'double fault .
Fatal double fault:
eip = 0xc0cf212b
esp = 0xe2bfaff8
ebp = 0xe2bfb010
cpuid = 0; apic id = 00
panic: double fault
cpuid = 0
KDB: enter: panicDoes anyone have a clue?

Have you enabled ACPI in the bios or disabled the gpioapu driver?
The error doesn't look the same but you're booting differently so….

Hi, thanks for your reply. Gpioapu is indeed disabled in loader. The box seems pretty stable otherwise, crashes only happen during package installation… Attached is the crash report.

Only the Freeradius package or any package?

Any package… I tried Arpwatch a couple of times, as it is pretty small. Most of the times the box crashed halfway through the download, but it did install once.
Freeradius pretty much crashes at 4-10% downloading most of the times, sometimes a little bit later. To rule out the SSD I've copied a couple of 1G files to and from the firebox without a problem...

Since you're probably the only person on Earth running that particular combination of hardware it's tough to narrow down the cause.
I would have to recommend a fresh install as a test and possibly also swapping back in the original CPU. That is a 533MHz FSB CPU yes? They are known to cause timing problems with powerd which it looks like you have enabled since it's loading est(4) (and failing).Steve

The only person in the world! Cool. My mother always told me I was special ;)
Yes, it's running a 533 Mhz FSB Pentium M. I'll try to replace it with the stock processor in a couple of weeks, and do a fresh install. I'm about to move, most of my stuff is already packed and for now it's easier to just run the Firebox for a while without Radius.
I think I'll have to stick with WPA2-PSK for a little while :-X
Thanks for your input!
