USB Nic that works with pfsense onAPU?
-
Hello,
are there USB Nics that works fine on the APU1D Maschine?
Best Regards

… or a dual mini pcie ethernet card

Wouldn't something like this work fine?

No idea how you'd physically cable it. Dremel away.
An APU case with a place for one of those card edge brackets (not an actual card slot) would be slick.

The Trendnet TU2-ET100 H/W:V4.0R works on 2.x but they are getting hard to find. The TU3-ETG H/W:V1.0R is recognized by 2.2, but I haven't tested extensively. Everyone loves to talk about how much USB nics suck (and they do), but I've used them for low-bandwidth applications- sync interfaces, dsl, etc. and have had little problems. It's helpful to have something in the bottom of your kit that can add a port to an Alix or APU, even if it's a stopgap until you swap the box out.

Hi,
the "Jetway 2x 10/100/1000 LAN Mini PCIe Module" does not fit in the APU, because the circuit board (some of the components) is too thick.
This Delock MiniPCIe I/O PCIe fits, but is not recognized by pfSende (but it should, its a Realtek RTL8111E)

If you're looking for a mini PCIe card, GruensFroeschli used a Cervoz one in an APU. You might have to hunt for a used one, or find the replacement.

2.2 uses FreeBSD10.1. We found that several usb-lan adapters work fine on Alix2d13 and FreeBSD-versions upto 9.0 but not on more recent versions. We tested several adapters with different chips. Same with APU.
As far as I can tell PfSense has an additional issue: no usb-lan kernel drivers loaded.

Did you read the part where I mentioned ASIX axe (10/100) and axge (GB) work on 2.2?
I have and old rue (RTL8150) that also comes up on 2.2, so there are in fact usb lan drivers in the kernel. kldstat shows aue, kue, and cue also. Which adapters do you have that work under 2.1.x or FreeBSD 9.x that do not work on 2.2?
Perhaps you could provide dmesg and the regression could be reported to the drivers maintainer.
edit- my test was on an APU running 2.2 x64 nano -
a spectra-salesman told me that the MEC-LAN-M002-R1 is the successor

http://www.spectra.de/suche_act.cfm?Artikelnummer=143335&Searchstring=&suchart=1I ll try it.

I have to correct my earlier comment: the if_axe driver is indeed in the kernel. The problem is (probably) the usb-controler on the alix-board. If I attach a usb-lan adapter tot the alix (interface ue0), I can see messages on the interface from the LAN (tcpdump -vvv -i ue0), I can ping from the Alix to the LAN, but there is no response from the Alix to ping from the LAN (can see the ICMP-echo-request on ue0 coming in).
We have tried various usb-lan adapters before on Freebsd-versions beyond 9.0 and none of them worked.
PfSense 2.1 should have no problem because it is based on an older version of FreeBSD. -

edit- my test was on an APU running 2.2 x64 nanoI tried to reproduce this using 2.2-64bit on APU with various adapters using axe, mos and aue drivers. Same problem: ping from APU to LAN, no response pinging from LAN. See incoming messages on ue0 interface.
Worked fine upto FreeBSD9.0, not on 9.1 etc. -
I did a quick test on an APU (2.2 nano x64), plugged in an axge, re-assigned the LAN from re2 to ue0.
I have a laptop directly connected. Switched the cables and found I could ping from the APU to the laptop, but not from the laptop to the APU. Disabling pf then reloading from the gui fixed this. I then shut down and swapped the axge with the rue, booted up and everything seemed normal.
The same thing happened when I switched back from ue0 to re2, so it looks like a filter reload is needed after switching the LAN assignment, and not something specific to usb nics.
If you can list the steps to produce the non-responsive behavior, I would file a bug report, but try reloading the filter first. I don't have an Alix handy right now, but I would expect the behavior to be similar to the APU. -
Hello,
if this problem is still persisting and alive, here is a work around for this and it ads also
one more RJ45 GB LAN Port on top.DELOCK 95237 :: MiniPCIe I/O PCIe full size Giga LAN 2x bracket
PC Engines Alix APU case with HDD, 2 LAN Ports extra and WiFi holes
Both together will be surrounding the problem an space for a HDD/SSD comes also on top. -
We finally found the cause of the problem: if pf service is stopped one usb-lan adapter works fine (two used simultaneously do not work at all). No problem with ipfw firewall. We also tested a pf-patch that solved the problem (still under development).
