Embeded upgrade 2.1.3 -> 2.2 release problems
-
I saw when I logged into the web gui that there was an update available. My old version was 2.1.3 running embedded on a CF card on a repurposed firebox x1000 appliance.
It will no longer boot - the ethernet port lights stay stuck at the 10mbps level (there are 2 sets of lights 1 for 100mbps and 1 for 10mbps).
I see the following output from the serial console after booting, the last part just keeps repeating forever. Any ideas? I have no idea what to do.

EDIT: well I let it stay in that loop for a while and then the thing just powered down on its own. Now when I try to switch it back on nothing happens and when I take the case off to look at the unit the cpu fan isnt turning on and the other fans are just sitting there twitching…. dunno wtf happened..... any ideas?

Some more info:
I was advised to verify the CF card was still good so what I did was I set up a special vmdk file so I could boot a machine directly from the cf card via a usb adaptor on my desktop and the card turned out to be good. pfsense booted properly unlike on the firebox and had the output shown below. So I'm guessing hardware failures or something…. which i'm still not 100% convinced because everything was working just fine until I updated to 2.2.... though it probably went a different code path since the expected interfaces weren't on the VM I booted up.... ??? ideas???

Perhaps disable DMA?

If the link LEDs don't come up and the fan isn't spinning you have some hardware problem. Probably bad capacitors or a dead PSU. Those boxes are now really pretty old, a reboot can often reveal some fault that you didn't know about. :(

That's what I was thinking :( guess it's time for new hardware…
Would that still cause the loop shown in the first post where it kept trying some ata thing?

Not necessarily but if you have bad caps or a PSU with a shaky rail you can get some weird symptoms.
The fan just twitching like that is a sure sign of something attempting to come up and then immediately dropping out, the 12V rail perhaps.Steve
