Last year I tried setting up pfsense, and it worked for about 2 days then was unable to connect to the internet through PPPoE (see http://forum.pfsense.org/index.php/topic,51518.msg275707.html).

Last week I got around to trying again. I installed from scratch, started it up, and it worked perfectly. I enabled Dansguardian and Squid and Captive Portal.,

      Everything worked perfectly.

      For 3 days.

Then every site got blocked by Dansguardian for content scan failing. As far as I could tell, clamav was not running, and I couldn't get it to run. So I uninstalled Dansguardian.

      Everything (else) worked perfectly.

      For another 4 days.

Today, the PPPoE dropped and could not be restarted – exactly the problem I had last year. Other devices were able to make a PPPoE connection immediately.
I restored the saved configuration from a week ago, and (after Dansguardian reinstalled -- I didn't realise that would happen with an old configuration file) everything is working perfectly.

      For how long?

Can anyone provide any explanations as to why processes or interfaces just stop working and cannot be restarted?

I just had to turn off Dansguardian to post my previous question, as I kept getting blocked for "Web upload" and I couldn't work out how to turn that off. I thought Dansguardian was supposed to only block uploads that include file upload, not a form submission.

Also, I did just remember one change I made during the week. I turned on UPnP. but everything worked for at least 2 days after I turned on UPnP. And it still doesn't explain why things just stop and cannot be restarted.
