Same IP on my external IP as my DNS-address
-
Hi!
I have a slightly problem with getting the same IP on my external address as my DNS-address when I visit for example ipleak.net. Someone told me it could be that 127.0.0.1 is among the other DNS-servers IP when I check status on the Dashboard.
I have tried to tick/untick "Do not use the DNS Forwarder as a DNS server for the firewall", but it doesnt help. I have entered custom dns-servers (my VPNs ip) in "DNS servers" under "General Setup".
Does anyone have a clue why PfSense does this?

In order to get working DNS.
Alright, thanks for the reply! Is this common, and does it even matter if it shows exactly the same ip for both my IP address and DNS address?

I understand that you would like ipleak.net to detect the same IP for both IP address and DNS IP address but currently it does not. You are making changes to your DNS settings so it appears that you would like ipleak.net to detect the DNS IP address to be the same as your IP address. I am guessing that your IP is assigned by a VPN provider. Yes?

Im sorry for my bad description (and language). No, this is what currently happens. Actually I would like to have their standard DNS address, but I get the same addresses on both instead. My VPN provider says it will not affect my integrity, but its not "quite right" that I have the same IP address on both.

Not a problem. Keep custom dns-servers (my VPNs ip) in "DNS servers" under "General Setup".
To use them , make sure that you have DNS Forwarder service enabled and DNS Resolver disabled.

If you are using the resolver, ie the new default setup in 2.2 yes your IP address will be your dns server since that is the IP doing the dns query.. Why is this an issue??
How do you think using some other dns is more secure than having pfsense actually go to the owning servers and requesting what your looking for and using dnssec?

Thank you both for your answers! I will keep the settings as it is.
