Can you turn DHCP off initially?

Well, then use the GUI. Not really keen on resetting any of the boxes to verify. When you set up LAN IP, it for sure asks about DHCP.

Is there a manual for pfsense?
I had to manually set the virtual clinets ip to be on the same subnet to get to the web portal, but I can't seem to get into the portal.

Are you using the quick/simple setup.. I just did this a few times with 2.2.2 and don't recall it asking - I know in previous versions it use to. Or maybe it was phase 2 when you hit the web gui..
Will run through a setup real quick and check.
Ok as soon as the console comes up with all the numbers you can pick and showing your wan and lan address, if you goto 2 you can assign IP to your lan and will ask you to enable or disable dhcp

But it doesn't matter, disabled it through the web interface. Thanks for the help all!

it worked. I setup the wan interface to connect to my local lan.
And I did all this within virtual box. Just set the NIC connecting to my lan to be a bridged network, and let it get an IP automatically.
The client (a win 7x64 vm) and the server (server 2012 x64 trial version vm) are connected to a virtual lan with static ip's (virtual box hands out ips automatically, regardless of the network config), and the vm running pf sense has one NIC connected to the virtual lan, and annother connected to the host NIC via a bridged connection.
Gave the NIC connected to the virtual lan a static ip, and I disabled the restriction about allowing experimental addresses through pfsense. Bobs your uncle, I have network connectivity. Its actually pretty cool.

??? this is the very basic way to setup a virtual pfSense lab. pfSense WAN is on your real LAN (with Block Private Networks unchecked of course), and the pfSense LAN is an internal network. That's how I play with it at home.

It only asks you if you want to configure DHCP on LAN if you use menu option 2 to re-assign the IP addresses after pfSense is already setup. At the initial interface assign screen on first boot it does not.
Edit: Hmm, I was sure about this until just now… ;)
