How stable and tested is pfsense and its updates?

Hi guys!
I'm a Zentyal user looking for a replacement. Zentyal is working for us, but has a few issues.

The updates aren't 100% reliable, they may break things, create new bugs that are solved by deleting things here or there (Normally stuff no longer needed after the update, but who weren't deleted during the update process)

Some services (Openvpn?) may be a bit unstable. We have a site2site with a branch office. If their server gets restarted (a normal restart, not an unexpected or forced one), when it boots back, we need to connect to it, and reload its firewall rules. If we dont do that, the clients at the branch office cant see our main network.
For those kinds of stuff, before applying updates i always make a working snapshot (we have it inside a virtual machine), because we don't thrust the stability of the product.
Now since Zentyal has become a mail server and its killing all the gateway stuff, we need to migrate to another product and im evaluating pfsense.
So, pfsense users, what do you have to say about the stability of pfsense and its updates? its rock solid? (centos style), or something more "work in progress" with bits of hacking here and there to make things work?

The base install is solid. The add-on packages are hit & miss. They mostly work but some require hacks.

I know, i'm a software developer myself, but i find it too much to push alpha quality updates to users.

So, as long as i stay within the base install, everything should be solid and stable? i have just installed it, and as far as i can see i only need to add squid to be 100% covered.

That would just happen to be one of the packages that people are having problems with at the moment.
