Because xDSL does do gigabit. You need gigabit switch on LAN. Gigabit ports on WAN are of no use.

I've got a gigabit switch connected to the pfSense box which is also gigabit; assumedly gigabit to the modem in bridge mode is what I want, surely?

I really do not see what are you going to do with the gigabit there. xDSL does NOT do gigabit. Not even close. VDSL2 can do 100Mbps in theory. That's all.

If it meets the specs of your DSL, I'm partial to the ZyXEL P660F1.  EZPZ bridge mode.  I think it caps out at about 10Mbit/s on the DSL side.

                  D-Link DSL32x

Keep in mind that there are different ADSL2+ standards (Annex-A, Annex-B, Annex-J) and you need the appropriate modem for each.
ADSL2+ itself maxes out at 16Mb/s which means a gigabit NIC would be overkill. Nobody builds that.

Actually it's 24Mbps maximum with ADSL2+ (ITU G.992.5) but the point is still 99% correct. Gigabit ones with built in WiFi etc most definitely do exist. I don't see any simple wired only ones though.

However if you had a very simple home network with only a couple of wired devices and maybe an AP (and thus no pfSense) having a 4 port gigabit switch in the modem itself could be useful.

TP-Link TD-8840T for me here and dirt cheap at AUD$28 (10/100 only into my pfSense box which does have a gigabit interface)

I would recommend getting one that your ISP supports.  That way if you have any issues you won't have them telling you we don't support it.  :-[

As several people have mentioned your connection the the Internet is not going to exceed 100mbit so I would get a simple DSL modem and invest in a nice AP that can handle fast speeds.

Can anybody recommend me a basic best-bang-for-buck ADSL2+ modem with one (or more, though not needed) gigabit ports and preferably no WiFi? I already have an Aerohive AP230 on the LAN so any WiFi is overkill.

I used to use Billion BiPAC 8800NL with pfSense (running on WG Firebox) in modem-only mode with WiFi switched off before moving to Virgin. I was very happy with it. Best!

I used a Draytek V120 for years before moving to fibre. It was good for close to the maximum line speed. I do live very close to the exchange which helped, I used to see 23Mbps+ from several UK ISPs. Is has a single 100Mb port.

VDSL2 could theoretically provide >100Mbps if you are close enough to the termination point but I don't think I've seen anyone offer a service above 100Mbps.

Only issue I have that I could not resolve yet is this here:
