Motherboard Question - ASRock J1900DSY
-
Hello Everyone,
Currently, I need a little help making sure I'm not buying the incorrect parts – mainly the motherboard for a pfSense build. The motherboard I'm looking at is linked below and shows it supports FreeBSD 9.2 (32 / 64 bit) (SATA AHCI mode). Will this motherboard and its two intel i210 nics work okay with version 2.2.2? Should I expect to run into any issues?
Also, I haven't used a motherboard with UEFI, which this motherboard has for it's BIOS. From reading online, it sounds like there are problems installing unix/linux based system with this type of BIOS. Is there any trickery I need to do to install pfSense (onto a disk)?

Can't speak to this ASRock board specifically (but I have the Gigabyte board with the J1900)… if it works with FreeBSD 9.2, I would think it should work fine with 10.1, which is what pfSense 2.2.2 uses.
As for UEFI... you'll need to edit the boot settings in the BIOS to disable secure boot (if enabled) and use legacy mode, not UEFI.

Also that board has IPMI so you won't need to use a disk to install. Once you've used IPMI you'll wonder how you ever got by without it.
Nice find too. I've been considering retiring my P4 rig that I use right now for a similar supermicro based build but may go with this one just because it has IPMI and the supermicro J1900 boards don't.

Sorry about that, I meant installing onto a disk (HDD or SSD, I'll be using an SSD) instead of running it off of the USB port. I been looking around for a while for the most bank for my buck and settled on this board mainly for the price and IPMI. However, I never used IPMI but thank you for letting me know I can install it through there, that sounds awesome!
I'm just more cautious due to it having no reviews anywhere online, but will post after I have the system running as I think it is a fantastic option for the cost. Thanks for the help everyone!

If you end up buying this board please post back here on how well it works or any issues it may have.
I'll subscribe to this thread so I don't miss it.

I'm running the ASRock Q1900M, 8GB RAM 1333, Intel EXPI9301CTBLK aand EXPI9402CTBLK. Runs great, several packages, all logging, ~10-14% CPU @ idle, and only 1GB ram useage.

Well did you get this up and running? Have you measured power consumption? Are you happy with it?
