I know there is a list of supported 3G/4G modems, but it seems to be a bit outdated as all of the Verizon cards listed aren't even sold by Verizon anymore.  I also looked on the FreeBSD compatible page that the documentation recommended.  Does anybody know a reliable 3g/4g usb modem from Verizon or any other major U.S. carriers that works with pfsense?

I can't speak to compatibility with PFSense but the Verizon 4G Pantech UML290 card is known for it's compatibility and works on Linux and worked on Mac OSX before Verizon released the Mac software.

Actually, looks like the list was updated:

Verizon Pantech UML290 appears to be working with documentation: http://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/Verizon_UML290
