On new install with SSD+HDD can I tell pfSense what to write where?
-
I currently have an SSD and a HDD in the machine I am configuring. I am also making use of RAM Disks under System>Advanced. I'd like to change the settings so that it writes a little more frequently to disk (every hour) however I'd like it to write to the magnetic HDD rather than the SSD. Is that possible? PfSense is installed to the SSD.
I can manually put backup package and config files on the HDD so I have a local copy. It's the automatic writing of the /tmp and /var (and any other similar files I do not know about) that I'm concerned about. Do I even need to worry about writing to SSD?

No. Plus, there's no need to be concerned. That SSD certainly will not be damaged by writing to /var or /tmp, in fact there's no need to use any ramdisks either.

Why would the pfSense developers include RAM Disk as a configurable option if there was no need for it?

Look, on any recent SSD, you can write hundreds of TBs of data and it will still be well alive and kicking. That's a usage that's never gonna happen with /tmp or /var on pfSense…
