Recently pfSense is showing me increased packet loss in the quality tab of the rrd-grapher (see attached image). As you can see the loss was introduced not long ago and is kind of persistent ever since. I am using a "standard" dsl 6000 pppoe connection (nothing special, dsl modem/router in bridge mode) and nothing has changed in my setup except the amount of packets lost. Any idea about what's going on here? Thanks!

I would guess it's some upstream problem. It could be a bad cable or a failing card at the exchange (happened to me twice).
Can you access any stats on your modem? Has the connection speed dropped? SNR?

Well, I haven't checked noise values (for comparison anyway, I could get current values), but I know that the speed dropped. The modem would sync with up to 6912kBit/s before (when there was no packet loss). Now, It syncs with 5376kBit/s. Upload speed is constant at 736kBit/s.
So, do you suggest to call my ISP for help?
Edit: I have called my ISP for help…they are investigating and will call me back.

Yes, nothing much you can do yourself if it is upstream. By graphing the line quality you can pass on the date and time when things went bad which may help them trace the problem quicker. It's probably worth examining the cable local to yourself for obvious damage, ISPs tend to want to charge you if they find a bicycle leaning against the cable for example.  ;)

Seems to have been something obvious since it has been fixed upstream right away. The packet loss is minimal again. They didn't tell me about the cause though. Would have been nice I think. Something like "sorry for the performance issues, our foo was bar and has been replaced".
