C2758 10gb to Procurve?

I'm considering recommending a C2758 directly from pfSense for use in a local government agency for firewalling/routing multiple connections to other local government agencies as well as firewalling our Internet connection and handling internal VLAN routing.
Since we have quite a lot of internal VLANs I want to make sure that throughput and bandwidth will not be problematic, so I'd like to get one of the 2x10gb SFP+ expansions. Which brings me to my question:
Has anyone successfully connected any HP ProCurve switches to a Chelsio SM10G-CR or SM10G-SO-CR with a twinax cable? I highly suspect that the Chelsio 10gb module will only work with Chelsio approved transceivers/cables, and I suspect even more highly that any Procurve modules will only work with HP transceivers/cables.
I would like to avoid having to shell out for fiber transceivers. Can I avoid having to shell out for fiber transceivers or will twinax cables just not work between the C2758 and an HP Procurve switch?

The Chelsio 10G SFP+ twinax cable work with Cisco SG500x and vice versa, Cisco 10G SFP+ twinax cable works with Chelsio cards so they are not vendor locked. I can not comment on ProCurve compatibility though. If you can grab one of the Chelsio twinax cables and try, I did purchase mine from netgate (http://store.netgate.com/10G-SFP-Twinax-passive-cable-1-meters-P2171.aspx).
Make sure your ProCurve has 10G SFP+ compatible ports first though, on Cisco Catalyst for example using 3rd party SFP/SFP+ modules one has to enable "unsupported" modules first, otherwise the interface will not work.

I've never had a card or switch refuse to work with a SFP+ DA cable, regardless of brand. That does occur with optics on some devices (I'm looking at you, Cisco), but they almost always have a way to override and use it anyway. My Nexus 5xxx & 2960-X switches at work are all using generic stuff from approvedoptics.com. Most of my DA cables come from cablesondemand.com. My SG500X switches at home are all using generic cables as well.
EDIT: FYI, the C2758 can't route 10Gbe of traffic yet. It may be able to do close to that in a later version of pfSense once DPDK is done.

Worth a shot at that price. Thank you! I wouldn't imagine HP would be any more restrictive than Cisco in this case.

Thanks for the cable info! And for the edit about routing capability. Fortunately there's new hardware out now for me to look at!

Why not run 10.000base-T and get rid of the fiber unless you need the distance?

The C2758 wont route 10gbit/s in a mixed packet scenario.
If you buy from pfsense store, then its called the XG-1540.

I consider to this statement or until the Intel QuickAssist will fully be integrated in pfSense.

10 GBit/s are 10 GBit/s, eother over copper or fiber cable. And a new Netgear XS708e is starting at

I would also consider here but on the other hand nothing is more real then a real done test!
And an Intel 10 SFP+ Adapter is cheap to get over ebay for ~90 € bucks or so.If the hardware must be bought it should be the XG-1540 as I see it also right
or a Intel Xeon E3-1286v3 and 16 GB ECC RAM, this would be also a really powerful
pfSense appliance that is able to handle this speed.
