Beeping then reboot

I've been running my pfSense router (2.0.1 release) for over a year now and it's been completely faultless. Last night the speaker beeped rapidly for about 5 seconds then the router rebooted itself. I was too late to see what it was doing until just before it finished it's boot up. Does anybody know what would have caused this or how I can find out?
PS: I don't want to upgrade the firmware unless I absolutely have to. I have a roommate who is a nightmare if he can't access the internet 24/7.

Sounds like the kind of beeps that would only come from a hardware problem, or maybe a stuck key on the keyboard. The latter doesn't seem likely as it wouldn't have stopped nor caused a reboot (unless ctrl-alt-del was pressed in the process), where for the former that wouldn't be unusual. Check your motherboard's manual for beep codes and see if one of them matches up to what you heard.
Nothing in the OS would beep other than the normal shutdown and startup beep sequences which aren't really rapid nor are they 5 seconds long, so make sure you have some standby hardware, you're pretty much guaranteed to have a hardware problem.

Thanks for the reply. I was initially thinking hardware but since it has been stable again since rebooting and the machine isn't running warmer than normal I am at a bit of a loss. At this stage I'm thinking either hard drive or memory error. The hard drive's so old it doesn't have S.M.A.R.T. so I can only really check the memory.

I had a desktop once that did that when it had an overheat condition. I'd also lean toward hardware causes.
