      The 2.2.4-DEVELOPMENT images got a lot bigger on 02-Jul-2015:

      There was an "Add Python" change on that day, which I guess is in 2.2.4 also and maybe is the cause of the sudden jump in size?

          Yeah, there's python added. (Did unpack the thing and compare, since I was curious as well….)

            Python should not need to be added to the 2.2.* release series. It will only be needed for V3, and so maybe someone would like it on 2.3 to be able to easily try out bits of snake programing without having to manually add Python.
            I wonder why it was added to RELENG_2_2 branch of pfsense-tools?

              No idea. But it could have been worse - accidentally added snakes are still better than say perl, or (yuck) java. :D

                It was intentionally added. It's useful for a variety of things. Two immediate things were Azure and some testing automation we're doing.
