Kobold ehm i mean which mode for PowerD Min Max Adaptive Hiadaptive.

Min = using only the minimal cpu frequency
Max = using from the lower bottom up to the highest top cpu frequency (recommended)
High adaptive = using only the highest available cpu frequency

        @RpR:

Anyone has a real life test with the APU-1D board?
What throughput does it gives? I want to replace my ALIX.2D13 board because it only gives me 50/10Mbps

        Hi all

I also want to buy a APU-1D Board to replace or to use as backup my current Alix.2D13 Board.

What i want to do is:

        • Backup (Via web GUI) current pfsense settings from AlixBoard.

        • Install pfsense 2.2.x on the new 4GB CF Card

        • Install the new Card into the APU Board

        • Restore (Via web GUI) pfsense settings (from Alix) to the new pfsense installation (On APU).

Question: Is it possible? Or different Hardware means some backup/restore problems between each one? (Ports Settings eth0, eth1 conflicts or something like that?)

If it is depending of the hardware, i have to buy a second Alix board. And i hope here, there is no HW issues with backup/restore between the both devices.

        Thanks for your help/feedback/advise
        Regards
        Astro

That shouldn't be a problem. It will ask you to reassign the interfaces when you restore the Alix config. The APU will be re1 WAN re2 LAN re0 OPT.
Also the serial speed will be 115200 on the APU bios and default for 2.2.x

This seems to be a good choice.

            • Backup (Via web GUI) current pfsense settings from AlixBoard.

Please read what @dotdash was writing over that issue.

            • Install pfsense 2.2.x on the new 4GB CF Card

APU has only mSATA, SATA, USB and SD slot options

            • Install the new Card into the APU Board
            • Restore (Via web GUI) pfsense settings (from Alix) to the new pfsense installation (On APU).

            Please read above

Question: Is it possible? Or different Hardware means some backup/restore problems between each one? (Ports Settings eth0, eth1 conflicts or something like that?)

Possible but comes with some challenges.
            I would suggest;

            • Buy a good mSATA SDD
            • Buy a good serial to usb adapter or cable at amazon
            • Setup the serial console speed as from @dotdash explained
            • Do there a fresh pfSense 2.2.3 install
            • Reconfigure step by step
            • Tuning for the mbuf perhaps, enable PowerD is a must be!

              Hi all

              Thank you for your feedbacks.

Yes you're right, there is no more CF Card for APU. I was wrong.

So the SD Card or mSata Drive have to be installed outside the enclosure (SD via USB). Is it right?
No more memory devices (SD, etc…) inside the enclosure?

Of course a fresh config after a fresh new installation would be the best solution.
But i have a lot of configs and want to use the Backup/Restore feature to spend a lot of time.

Tuning for the mbuf perhaps, enable PowerD is a must be!

Here you are over my knowledge about pfsense and nano. What is this exactly? ;-)

              Many thanks
              Astro

The APU has an SD card slot. The procedure is the same as loading a CF card for an Alix- Use physdiskwrite or similar and insert the card into the unit, then assign interfaces via serial. I usually use the x64 nano version.

                  Thanks!

                  I ordered this today:

                  1 apu1d4
                        APU.1D4 system board 4GB

                  1 case1d2blku
                        Enclosure 3 LAN, black, USB

                  1 ac12veur2
AC adapter 12V 2A euro for IT equipment

                  1 msata16d
                        SSD M-Sata 16GB MLC Phison

                  1 cr2032
Batt Li CR2032 w/ solder tails

And i will try to migrate from Alix to Apu. If it fails, i will config everything, step by step.

                  Just q new question now:

How can I/Should I install PfSense on the SSD?

With "Live CD with installer (On USB Memstick)" and this kind of nanoBSD Image: pfSense-memstick-serial-2.2.3-RELEASE-amd64.img.gz.
                  Is it right?

                  Thanks
                  Regards

                    With "Live CD with installer

                    On the mSATA or SSD

This kind of nanoBSD Image: pfSense-memstick-serial-2.2.3-RELEASE-amd64.img.gz

                    On the USB stick according to this two HowTo´s;

                    • Writing Disk Images
                    • INstalling pfSense

                    So it would be the best, led you by thoos HowTo`s to gain your goal, but the very best at first would be;

                    • Windows, Linux or MacOS based Laptop or PC
                    • serial to USB adapter or cable
                    • USB stick
                    • SD card
                    • Win32DiskImager software
                    • Putty or Kitty

If something fails or goes wrong, often this things would bring you out of the trap.
Nice to have, but not a must be, pfSense book from amazon and Internet connection for crawling pfSense Doc`s.

If it fails, i will config everything, step by step.

This would be also a really good choice, mostly not beloved by users, but the cleanest way.

How can I/Should I install PfSense on the SSD?

USB Stick or CD via PXE or TFT server.

                          Hi Guys

                          Some news!

All HW received yesterday. As allways, tip top from pcengines.ch.

                          Today:

                          • HW Assembly, msata Disk plugged, cooling installation (delivred with). (About 15 minits)
                          • Installation of "pfSense-memstick-serial-2.2.3-RELEASE-amd64.img" on a USB Drive with Win32DiskImager-0.9.5 (About 22 seconds!)
                          • Serial Console Access with PuTTy @115200 (15 seconds)
                          • Booting the APU Board with USB Drive (Choose F12 to boot on it…)  (15 seconds)
                          • Following the instruction  (2 minits)
                          • Installation of PfSense on the msata Drive successfull (5 minits)
                          • Configuration of the WAN Interface on rc0 (No other choice, unable to configure LAN and OPT Interfaces via console at this stage). (30 seconds)
                          • Reboot! (30 seconds!)
                          • Login as admin via https!
                          • Enabling and configuring LAN and OPT Interfaces via webgui. (30 seconds)

Next step: Restore of ALL Settings!

2 ways: Restore via Recovery feature or manually (Probably proper and performance problem less)

                          Keep in touch.

One last thing for now: This APU Bord rocks! It is a Ferrari vs ALIX Board! ;-)

                            • setting up the baud rate fix to 115200on putty, at the Aolix APU and pfSnese comes with this even.
                            • Activating TRIM Support
                            • Activating PowerD with adaptive or high adaptive mode
                            • perhaps if needed setting up higher mbufs numbers (3% till 4% of RAM is then in use)

                              3 ways actually!

I use the 3rd one: Using "High Avail. Sync" feature (Under Menu->System).

I sync the settings between the current Main FW (Alix Pfsense v2.2.2) and the new next one FW (APU Pfsense 2.2.3).
                              It works awesome!

The rest is done manually. Take some times, but refresh all the many features that Pfsense has!

APU is now online as master. Alix as backup, in case of!
                                And it rocks!

                                Thanks all for your help!
