Root Mounting Error
-
I'm a newbie on pfSense and want to set it up on a Shuttle PC. I have a SSD installed and using a LiveCD, read from a USB-optical drive.
After booting default it ends in the error:Manual root filesystem specification:
<fstype>: <device>Mount <device>using filesystem <fstype>eg. ufs:da0s1a
? List valid disk boot devices
<empty line="">Abort manual inputmountroot>
–--
mountroot> ? "Gives:
List of GEOM managed disk devices:
ad0 da4Manual root filesystem specification:
<fstype>: <device>Mount <device>using filesystem <fstype>eg. ufs:da0s1a
? List valid disk boot devices
<empty line="">Abort manual input
I'm new to this and I'm sure I'm missing something but I have tried follow other peoples solution on here hitting similar problems, but with no results. Most other posts seem to resolve issue after typing something like "ufs:/dev/ad0s1a"
I have tried that, and ufs:/dev/ad0, ufs:/dev/da4 , ufs:/dad0, ufs:/da4- same result
Tried follow this since I'm using a USB-DVD-reader to read the LiveCD off of, but didn't help either:
http://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/Boot_Troubleshooting#Booting_from_USBI'm sorry for my "way too basic" understanding of this, but any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

Before the mountroot> prompt there should have been a report like```
Trying to mount root from ufs:/dev/ad0s1aWhat was on reported on your system? **ad0** is a IDE or SATA drive, **da4** is a SCSI or USB drive. I suspect you might need to type something like **ufs:da4s1a** (the s1 means FreeBSD Slice [DOS Partition] 1, FreeBSD Partition a; a FreeBSD slice can contain a number of FreeBSD partitions each named by a letter).

Thanks for the reply!
Fixed it though! Or, not quite.. The report said just that:```
Trying to mount root from ufs:/dev/ad0s1aNow I'm stuck on VLAN setup…know of a good tutorial on this subject? :)

Glad you got it working.
Now I'm stuck on VLAN setup.
I suggest you start a new topic for that and give a lot more detail.
know of a good tutorial on this subject? :)
I have found Wikipedia is often a good place to start looking for more information about a particular topic. You could also look at the pfSense documentation pages at http://doc.pfsensense.org for more specific pfSense information.
