2.0.3 Broadcom Nic Active but no link lights
-
I have been building a few HP thin clients ( HP t5720, t5730 and t5740 ) and turning them into Pfsense routers I like the form factor and performance while being light on the power usage. I have a new batch of thin clients that I was loading up and I noticed one odd thing, I usually have the built in nic be the WAN port and on this new group when the WAN configuration is coming up it turns off the link lights, both of them, link and activity.
However if I drop to the shell and look at the interface (ifconfig) the interface is up and active, gig full duplex, the only thing that appears to be not working are the lights. I know they are Broadcom 10/100/1000 nics just nnot sure which specific ones they are, and I'm a linux guy and not sure what the equivalent to lspci is to determine what hardware is specifically in it.
Update appears that pciconf -lv might be what I want to do that will give me the card details, I will do that tonight.
I will not be able to do anything till tonight but if anyone has any suggestions on the nic lights and where to poke around that would be a nice start, thanks! :)

Give 2.1 a try and see if it's any better. It would definitely have more up-to-date drivers. It's possible that there is a quirk in that particular chip that causes it on the older driver.

Thanks, I took a quick peek and believe the card is a BCM 57888 card, works fine as I can tell I did some Iperf testing through it and it performed well. I did not have much time but since I sell these I would like to get the lights working for the card, but I will try the 2.1 release which I believe would solve the problem. If 2.1 was final I would be loading that up but will probably go with 2.0.3 unless I find other issues.
If anyone knows what I can do for the lights let me know, I think I will post in the freebsd forum and see what I can find out. Thanks.

Tried 2.1 last night same symptom, the card is active and seems to work fine, ran some iperf tests through it and it performed well, just the lights get turned off when the interface comes up. Anyone have any suggestions to get the lights back on,would be nice, thanks.

Hi
Sorry that i can't help with the original question but were there any issues using t5730 with pfsense, other than needing the pci expansion modules for additional lan cards.
I want to replace the full tower dell server that i am currently using with a silent low power machine.
Thanks
Richard

Just curious if anyone got pfsense 2.1 working well on these units. I just got a batch of 5 for free and was thinking of setting some up as firewalls.
