PFSense - New guys Build
-
Dear All
I have recently over the last couple of days just found out about pfsense and how amazing it is.
Although admittedly I still have a lot to learn I would just like some help for my proposed pfsense build.
So far my main aim is power efficiency to performance ratio since I intent to run the router 24/7 - cost also plays into matter.I'm thinking:
Amd - 5150 kabini (am1) - 4 cores 25w tdp (basically a under clocked 5350)
ASUS AM1M-A - Motherboard
8gb Ram
80gb HDD
300w 80+ Bronze - Corsair PSUMy broadband provider is BT and I have ADSL2+ connections no fibre optic.
Now my current home hub 4 is rubbish since I cannot set it too bridge mode therefore I plan to run my setup like this
Line - TP-LINK TD-8817 ADSL2+ Modem (Bridge Mode) - PfSense Router - TP-link 8 Gigabit Switch
- TP-link TL-WDN4800 N900 wireless adapter for wirelessThe Asus motherboard comes with a single gigabit nic to which I plan on adding another gigabit Nic so it can connect to the switch.
My main aim of this build is to use the router for network monitoring and a strong firewall. Also going to be used as private VPN server with OpenVpn so I can access my home internet via public wifi. Also I plan on running two small servers 1 for domestic lan use and a openCloud server for use externally. From the above it may already seem that I am still new to this and learning, however I kindly request your opinions on whether my proposed pfSense build will be sufficient enough for my needs - 5-7 people on the network at any given time.
Thank you for your help

But not on the same NUC together with the pfSense or let you want run all on the NUC?

I am in the process of purchasing a intel dual gigabit nic.
So the setup is going to be like this router -> pfsense box (1st nic input) -> 2nd nic out to Switch -> servers and local devices.
Generally speaking is my build with the 5150 am1 sufficient for pfsense or will it require more cpu headroom?
Thanks

Generally it would run for sure on it, pending on the support for the mainboard.
But related to the CPU and RAM it would be really nic running. But don´t expect to much
from this device owed to the throughput.
