      Hello,

      I'm running Pfsense 2.2.4. It's powered by an APC Smart UPS.  Other systems are running Powerchute Network Shutdown clients (PCNS). APCUPSD keeps locking up on PFsense, so I'm hoping NUT does it's thing.  If I run NUT in SNMP monitoring mode, does it by default try to shutdown the UPS after it receives a shutdown signal from the APC?  Or, does it just monitor the connection and shutdown when it receives the signal only?  Been looking everywhere for an answer and can't figure it out. I only have default settings.

      Cheers

        @esseebee:

        does it by default try to shutdown the UPS after it receives a shutdown signal from the APC?  Or, does it just monitor the connection and shutdown when it receives the signal only?

        Perhaps you could clarify the difference between those two. Cannot make sense of it.

          I apologise for the confusion.  I guess my question is this - Using the default NUT configuration, is there any chance that Pfsense will send a command to the UPS to shutdown the APC, as soon as it detects it is running on battery power?  I'm so sorry for my ignorance. It's embarrassing how little I know about SNMP and I'm new to NUT.  Thanks for your patience.

            I must be missing something here. You want to shutdown the UPS itself?  :o ???

              I believe he is worried that Nut will send the UPS the command to turn the load off.

              Assuming that is the question, then the answer is no, Nut will not instruct the ups to turn off.

                There's a pretty readable description of how NUT shutdown works here: http://www.networkupstools.org/docs/user-manual.chunked/ar01s06.html#Shutdown_design

                  Thank you so much, dennypage.  You answered my question. Thanks for the link, doktornotor.  I'll check it out.  Much appreciated as always.
