MPLS - any router for CE?
-
We are using an MPLS network and currently have cisco's attached to it via ethernet & ADSL.
Now our ADSL cisco's are fairly old (837's) and do not support ADSL2+ although they do connect and sync at 8mb.
So we are looking at new routers and was wondering if you could use any old router for a CE Router on this network.
Our MPLS provider has supplied us with our loopback addresses and our AS numbers which looks as though we have to use BGP to advertise our routes.
Now, I know pFsense can support BGP via openbgp so that might be an option. But just for a minute, let's consider a router that doesn't support BGP. How would you go about placing your route into the routing table so that others knew about your subnets?

I would bet that your providers MPLS network is invisible to you. If they are giving you a Ethernet hand off and you want to advertise your network to the Internet if they are using BGP then you have to use the same on your side. The ISP router and your router have to run the same routing protocol.

We are using a mixture of ethernet (as their PE router is on our premises) and ADSL where the PE router is at the exchange.
The ADSL connection comes in 2 types:
1. Where they just need you to specify a loopback address that they then enter into the vrf.
2. Where they ask for a loopback address and a lan subnet that they enter into the vrf. Now, with number 2, I would imagine you could use any old router as the lan is specified by the providers.
But with ethernet & number 2 above, it looks as though you have to use a mutual routing protocol eg BGP as that is the only way of getting the routes into the table.
