Startup step "cleaning backup cache" lasts a long time

I have a question regarding the step "cleaning backup cache" during the startup. It lasts more than 10 minutes on my pfSense. Is it normal ? How can I lower that delay ? Do you know what it's doing ?
I am using pfSense 2.1.5.

FYI, I removed the backup config files in /conf/backup/ and it is now quicker.
Some of the files were quite big as I added a lot of rules.
I still don't understand what pfSense tries to do during this step…

I am experiencing the same identical issue but my backup files are so big that the board can't boot at all :-X
One question: did you remove manually all and only .xml files or something else?

Just posting to say that I've been experiencing this issue. My PFsense router (2.3.1) takes a full 10 minutes to boot up, and plugging a monitor into the vga port shows it is processing the "cleaning backup cache" step. I only deleted everything in the backup cache conf folder a month ago, but it is still taking a long time to get past this step.
Is there a fix to this, either a fix to the underlying issue or just to disable this step? The excessive delay is quite aggravating, especially since I don't know what is going on without plugging a monitor into the router (I use one of those Mini PCs with a vga but no serial ports).

Thanks for that. Assuming the default is 30 backups and that is what was taking so long to process during boot, I've changed it to 5. I only had 1 previous configuration history recorded here (from yesterday), presumably because I deleted all the others.
I'm not sure if an excessive boot delay caused by cleaning the backup cache is normal or not (my router has an SSD so it shouldn't be due to slow disk IO). Surely, there would be more complaints if this was a usual occurrence. Anyhow, I'll see if 5 backups helps boot times.
