      Hello.

I´m new in this of firewalls in-a-box and I find very interesting solutions here @ pfSense site.  I´m evaluating to buy one of your appliances, but there is a question I haven´t found the answer reading throughout your site.

You say that appliances ships with the latest version of pfSense to date. My question is: If I buy one of these appliances, is it possible to update the software on an appliance in the future to a new release of pfsense?

Thank you in advance for your answer.

Yes, the devices support firmware updates, and we test the updates on the devices we sell first and most thoroughly.

Thank you very much Jim for your kind and rapid answer.

Now allow me some more questions:

          1. Firmware Upgrade means installing a new version of pfSense the my appliance?

          2. Where is the option for doing that?

          3. Is the installed memory enough for holding new versions? Isn´t there any memory constrains?

The upgrade process is easy and simple.  pfsense checks to see if there is a newer version, and if there is, it walks you through the easy download and upgrade.

pfSense 2.2.4 will run in 256MB (though you can easily run out!), the smallest amount of RAM in any of the current hardware is 2GB.
There is room for future expansion.  ;)

There are no wall mounting holes or brackets for any of models currently.

I think one of the smaller units may have some holes on the underside that could be used to screw it to a separate bracket if someone is a maker and able to craft one, but we don't have any that we offer/sell/support.

You would be able to realize it by your own or buy it cheap from elsewhere, here are a sample shown
from the Varia-Store. So you have to drill only two holes in the bottom of the case and thats it.
                    Sample 1 (Alix Board/Case) ~2 €
                    Sample 2 (APU Board/Case) ~10 €

                      Hello.
I need a device in an office just to connect from home to this office, only 1 connection and via openVPN or similar.

I have been reviewing the appliances and I wonder if SG-2220 is the device I need in the central office to act as a VPN Server.

                      Could somebody clarify me?

                      Thank you.
                      Regards,

Drop a note to sales@pfsense.org and someone there can help you choose. Be sure to give as much info as possible about the potential use case (bandwidth, # of connections, etc).

Is there any way to speed up your backorder processing?  In your store, the page for the SG-4860:

                          http://store.pfsense.org/SG-4860/

has said "ON BACKORDER UNTIL JANUARY 1, 2016" for quite some time.  That seems an awfully long time.

                          SG-4860, pfSense 2.4.5-RELEASE-p1 (amd64)

Perhaps some of the reselers or distributors are have some of them in stock you will be able to get
your hands on. Check out the website of the pfSense store. Otherwise you could also get your hands
on an ADI netgate device that is "like" the same tech. specs.

                            Nearly two month.

Indeed it is, and we certainly wish we could get them quicker. The supply issues are being worked out with the manufacturer, hopefully won't see things out of stock from January on (or not for long if they are).

I'm debating between building and buying.  Are there new/updated models coming into the store in Jan 2016 that are worth waiting for?  If not, I'll probably look to build from some of the specs the community has posted.

Pending on the new Intel Xeon D-15xx models this could really be true, that we can buy some new models
from the pfSense store then, with 8/16, 12/24 or 16/32 CPU Core, together with AES-NI, QuickAssist and
                                  capable of DPDK enabled software.

What is with the SG units from the store? Are they not enough for your needs? They are combining
the best of two worlds, the three miniPCIe + SIM slots from the APU system but with Intel GB LAN Ports
and an Intel C2000 SoC. Much RAM and eMMC storage. If I saved enough money I will go with an SG-8860
unit from them. Nothing else on the market is scratching on this box and can beat it.

The SG models were all newly released in the past 4-8 months and will be the current version for low end to mid range needs for some time. There isn't anything more up to date than what those systems contain at that range and won't be for quite a while.

Looking at the SG-4860 in the pfSense store:

                                      https://store.pfsense.org/SG-4860/

it now has the following note:

Units produced prior to 1 December 2015 have 4 GB eMMC flash. Units produced after 1 December 2015 have 32GB eMMC flash.

Sounds good to me.  But, is that enough for running OpenVPN and some ad blocking without a separate SSD?

                                      SG-4860, pfSense 2.4.5-RELEASE-p1 (amd64)

I've never used pfSense, so I don't know how it's done (natively or in something like Squid).  But, basically, maintain a list of ad domains to block.  Is that 32GB eMMC enough storage to hold the software and the data it needs.

For something likes pfSense & Snort & pfBlocker-NG I would go with the eMMC storage, but
for something like Squid with much more logging and perhaps caching on top I personally
would more tend to use a SSD or mSATA with more space. Others might be see it different.
