Simple Problem, Use all ports on router
-
Hi guys
I am running a pfsense (latest version) router and my mother board has 4 ports. I am using IGB0 for Wan and IGB1 for Lan. I would like to use the other two as switch ports if this makes sense. I still want these two ports to be routed on the same lan (192.168.0.1) as lan 1 I just want to be able to use these two to plug in two computers as if it were a switch.
Thanks
Hope I didn't make this too complicated. If anyone can just tell me the few steps needed. If I set it to lan, do I give it the same starting IP address that I did in LAN interface

It doesn't make sense. get a switch.

The two ports are sitting there doing nothing. The way I have the rack setup, my unread server is directly above it. I could use a 1 foot cat5 cable and hook directly to router. If i ever have to reboot switch this means my plex doesn't go down. If it is more complicated then its worth then I won't bother but just sitting there thought I would take advantage of it.
Thanks

Using router ports as switch ports is a complete waste. The absolute cheapest switch you could find will perform better.

If you insist, look up bridging interfaces.

looked up bridging interfaces. You are right. thanks for your time. sometimes Im dense :)

whats wrong if you assing it ip from diffrenet subnet ?
-
No problem at all using them as router (layer 3) interfaces. That's what they're for.
If you need a switch (layer 2), get a switch.

If you don't like the ports sitting there idle - why not break out your wifi onto its own segment.
If you really don't like them sitting there open, maybe setup a lagg for redundancy ;)
But as mentioned trying to use them as a "switch" port is completely pointless!!! You mention a rack.. How many nodes do you have on your network - I would think having more than 1 segment would be of way better use than trying to use them as switch ports.. Do you have anything that you have open to the internet? Put that into a dmz, break out your wifi - there you go those 2 ports used..

thinking I will take you up on that…Will try moving my wifi to its own separate lan this weekend. thanks..didnt think of that one
