I put together a pfsense box out of an old cure 2 duo 3gb ram box, threw a 120gb ssd in it and a 2nd intel gb pci-e nic (using that for wan port, onboard gb nic for lan).  Its up and running and seems great so far, just wondering if this is powerful enough overall for an average home network (5 pc's, handful of wireless devices).  Twitch streams, some online gaming, downloading etc.  thanks all!  I am putting another one together for a remove location, this one is going to be an old intel q6600 system.  Anything I need to be concerned with?  thanks all.

I would have thought that was overkill lol

Power consumption is the only thing to be aware of. core2 chips aren't super efficient by today's standards.

Find an old notebook and VLAN capable smart switch.  Has built-in console (keyboard & display) and UPS (battery backup).

Surely you have a friend or family member with a notebook they'd be willing to part with or is going to replace soon.  Snatch it up, add a smart switch and you'll have a nice home system.

Hi all, I'am looking to build a home appliance.

I need to connect a PPPoE ADSL modem and a 4-gigabit+Wifi N access point. The access point has connected 2 cell phones, 2 laptop, one TV. The switch has connected two single ethernet NAS, the TV reads multimedia contents form one NAS through wifi. I would need to connect via VPN to my home network forum outside, only to transfer small files 3 times/week.

There are issues using Realtek RT8111 family adapters? On Aliexpress I can find a lot of mini PC with dual LAN, but not Intel adapters. For space reasons, I need some with Slim ITX format.

Thanks in advance for your help!

PC Engine APU Board APU1D4 would be a budget suggestion, but that runs for sure pfSense with ease

Jetway NF9HG-2930 Thin mini-ITX Network Motherboard Board only option for self assembling
Jetway NF9HG-2930 Intel Celeron Quad Core ready to go box and powerful enough for a long time
