SG-2440: Installation (Upgrade). Console or USB? File name?
New to this box. Doing a first upgrade (2.2.1 to 2.2.5). Looked through documentation and searched forums, but still not clear about two issues:
- which file to use
- which process to use
Issue 1) which file to use:
When I log into my account (https://portal.pfsense.org/members/member) I see that there is a "USB Memstick Installer Image" but when I look at the "Readme.txt" in that directory it refers to different hardware (other than the SG-2440), and it says that it will reset to factory condition, and it says that it will erase current configuration:
Factory Recovery images for Netgate Hardware (FW-7541,LEC-2030).
This will reinstall the factory default image to a replacement hard drive or SSD.
This will erase any current configuration.Install to a USB stick, the boot the stick.
The software will install to the local hard drive. For a system with a vga console, please use:
netgate-memstick-2.1p1-RELEASE-amd64-20131112-1538.img.gz
For a system using a serial console, please use:
netgate-memstick-serial-2.1p1-RELEASE-amd64-20131112-1538.img.gz
*I see in the forums a reference to the "ADI" file. Is this "netgate-memstick-ADI-2.2.5-RELEASE-amd64.img.gz" the one that I should use for the SG-2440?
If not, then which file should I use and where is it found; if so, and in any case I have issue 2:
What are the options for installation?:
- logged into the console, there is an option (13) to "Upgrade from console"
Can I use the "netgate-memstick-ADI-2.2.5-RELEASE-amd64.img.gz" for the console upgrade option?
Or do I
- boot from USB using the "netgate-memstick-ADI-2.2.5-RELEASE-amd64.img.gz" file. If so, then will I lose my configuration? So I will need to restore configuration from backup? Most forum advise about upgrading seems to say that one can upgrade with packages and configuration in place and, if all goes well, that configurations are not lost. Is that different for upgrading this box?
Or
- if connected to the internet can one use "Auto Update" from the System, Firmware menu, or does this box (SG-2440) require to be updated using the "Memstick" file?
Thanks,
Todd

How about typing "auto" there?
-
Thanks for the reply. Not sure what it means…
Where would one type "auto" (in shell?) and what does that do?
By the way, the box is not connected to the internet, so doubt if any kind of auto install/upgrade would work.
Thanks,
Todd

Dunno, it hints you to type auto there instead of the URL and tells you it will pick up the correct file… Has always worked for me in the console. As for a firewall "not connected to internet", I'm afraid I cannot be of any assistance, same probably could be said about 99.99999999999% of other users.

Thanks again for your reply.
I understand that there are "auto" firmware options "System, Firmware, Auto Update" for example. From console as well, as you seem to be suggesting.
I am setting up this box as a replacement firewall and configuring as much as possible before connecting to my WAN/LAN. So, right, I am not connected to the internet while doing so. Does not seem to be such an unusual setup plan to me…
Cheers,
Todd
