Issue with recognizing network connections???? Maby??

Hi I am trying to install PFSense on a Dell POWEREDGE 1850 server with dual Intel gigabit NIC's builtin, and a PCI card with Dual Intel Gigabit NIC's they are all recognised as Intel(R) PRO/1000 Legacy Network Connection 1.0.something (trails off the screen), but it is unable to autodetect the WAN interface, cant ping 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4 (Google DNS servers) devices connected will recognise they are connected but cant ping eachother and cant access the server. When I connect/disconnect the networking cables the screen does not display any notification, but if I unplug/plug in the keyboard it notices right away and notifies me. I was hoping that someone could help.
I have PFSense installed on a 16GB PNY USB drive plugged in on the back of the server, it has 2XDual core 2.8GHz Xeons, 6GB DDR2 ECC RAM.
Thanks in advance
Justin

Speaking for myself, I had some trouble using newer releases of PFS on similar Dell hardware. Might be worth checking your hardware against the HAL here: http://www.freebsd.org/releases/10.1R/hardware.html

unplug your WAN cable
Run Assign interface
Do not set up VLAN
Press A for autodetec
Plug your WAN cable.Should work.

muswellhillbilly, yes it appears to be on the supported hardware list. According to the specs sheet it has "Dual embedded Intel Gigabit NICs; single and dual port Intel PRO/1000 MT Gigabit adapters" I have the dual port and it appears to be on the supported list as "Intel PRO/1000 MT Dual Port Server Adapter (82546)"
Torrian, I have tryed that and it dose not recognise the port, nor does it tell me that a network cord was plugged in.

The only other thing I can think of is possible physical hardware error. Have you tried running a test install using a different OS to see if the hardware picks up ok?

A few thoughts:
Breaking down the run on sentences would help to convey you meaning more succinctly.
The PE 18xx series are absolute garbage at this point. I gleefully toss them in the dumpster if they darken my door. They are loud, power hungry, and were prone to array failure even when relatively new.
Why not just assign em0,1,2,3 instead of using autodetect?
If you have two hosts on the same network that can't ping each other, it has nothing to do with your firewall.
Again, you need to state you problem clearly, you are saying multiple things- it doesn't work why you try autodetect to assign the interface, you can't ping google DNS (did you manually assign, or it it surprising you can't ping when the wan isn't assigned?), devices can't ping each other… what port is lan, what is wan? using the card or the onboard? Did you try using the onboard with the card removed?
