Issues with Hulu behind pfSense
-
Anyone else having issues?
Constant pauses and buffers with audio drops, and frequent freezes when loading up a show or a movie.
Sometimes we may go a whole movie without significant issues and the very next movie we can't even get to play more than 2 or three seconds at a time.
I wrote out a whole long email earlier and managed to hit the wrong key and lost the message, so this the short version. We are using a Fire TV – anyone else running Hulu and/or a FireTV?
Anything you did to make it work? Any tips at all, I'd apprecitae it.
I'm sure Hulu is tired of me calling them and Amazon has shipped three Fire TVs so far... -
Across many different pfSense configurations and versions (and non-pfSense router setups like my Cisco 877 and a not-so-great Sagemcom 1704n) I have streamed Hulu, Amazon Instant, Netflix, and YouTube with no problems on my 15Mbit/768Kbit connection.
The only time streaming has stuttererd is when my ISP was having bandwidth over-allocation problems. (I was getting 10% of the througput I paid for.)
Have you tried another router to confirm that pfSense is the problem?
Maybe completely disable traffic-shaping? -

Maybe completely disable traffic-shaping?I'm not even convinced pfSense is any part of the problem – I think it's all Hulu. Or maybe Amazon. Streaming Amazon content works without issues.
I was just hoping someone out there may have run across this and would have some quick tips, or we could at least trade tips to point the Amazon/Hulu tech support teams in a common direction.

.Honestly, every single time that I have dealt with a streaming problem, it was either my ISP or me (misconfiguration, p2p using all bandwidth, wireless interference, etc). I have not yet found the premiere streaming services to be lacking bandwidth.

I found this searching for the exact same issue. I was thinking maybe there is a way to prioritize hulu traffic or something. I have a FireTV and Hulu runs like absolute garbage. Of course, the wife blames me even though Amazon streaming content and Netflix run fine. Hulu is such a pile and I am sick of it. I know it isn't pfSense.

I wish the major streaming providers had a speedtest against their streaming servers.
-
Even if they did, I wouldn't trust them to not game the system.
-
Odd how the commercials never seem to have any issues - just the stuff we care to watch.

It seems Hulu with a Chromecast will play a section of show, then the commercials, then sometimes not load when it goes back into the show. Then the Chromecast needs to be rebooted. It ran a much better for a few shows when I rebooted pfsense and the netgear managed switch it runs into. Is there a test I should run to see what pfsense is doing when it hangs?

If the issue is not enough bandwidth, then do something like enable Codel or FairQ on your interfaces to reduce the damage of bandwidth hogs. Maybe even HFSC if it's a specific protocol that is being greedy.
