UPS with pfSense support and network communication
-
Hello!
I have been searching for a good UPS for days now. My goal is to find a good one price/quality that also is supported by pfSense through the NUT package (see http://www.networkupstools.org/stable-hcl.html). But it also has to support SNMP or some other network protocol because I want the UPS to send shutdown signals to my pfsense box and my QNAP NAS.
All the brands I took a look, between the home or small business category are USB only, which I don't think it will work in my case… unless I can connect it to my pfsense box and send a shutdown signal from here to my NAS as well?
I couldn't find an UPS that supports SNMP, for a small business/home that is not super expensive. Do you have any good recommendations? I would need it with "schuko" output as I live in Europe (Spain)
Thanks for any help!

Hello!
I've been searching more about this, but it seems like all the home/soho UPS doesn't come with SNMP support right away and you have to buy a SNMP card (which in some cases is as expensive as the UPS itself). Anyone has more knowledge on good UPS with SNMP support? As I said previously, I would need to shutdown 2 devices over LAN. Thanks!

What is your budget? And how much Voltage and VA must be there to hold your firewall, NAS
and eventually your LAN switch on top? This must or should be at first answered by your self please.I would need it with "schuko" output as I live in Europe (Spain)
Net Volatge: 230 V
Frequency: 50 Hz
Plug/Jack: Typ F
(The same likes in Austria or Germany)Here are some interesting offers to realize it;
All-in-one bundle:and you have to buy a SNMP card (which in some cases is as expensive as the UPS itself).
If you are able to get a cheap one that is supporting cards, you may be able to buy them also cheap at eBay.
Cards only:
- APC AP9617 SNMP Card ~39 €
- APC USV AP9617 SNMP Network / Web Management Card 10/100Base-T ~44 €
- APC SmartSlot Web/SNMP Management Card AP9606 (SNMP Ethernet Adapter) ~68 €
As an alternative you could go with a APC PSU USB variant and a MikroTik router that is supporting your
APC PSU and is sending also the shout down signal to all devices. -
Hello!
Thanks a lot for your reply. You suggestions looks cool except that it doesn't have schuko-out plugs :(
I've reviewed the products at APC website and it's like:
-
For Home usage they have Back-UPS and Back-UPS Pro lines, some models have schuko but none of them will have network capabilities, only USB
-
For Servers/Network they have Smart-UPS line which have network connectivity but there's not even a single model with schuko-out plugs.
Arrrggg!!! Kill me now :D

Hi,
This kind of connector could help with the schuko problem:
(IEC320 C13 to Schuko) -
Well ideally I would like to avoid adaptor as will make the whole thing too bulky. I imagined that I could get an UPS with schuko and SNMP… But it seems harder than what I thought :(
Thanks!

having spent time configuring a AP9617/AP9630 for NUT and auto shutdown of several servers etc, I suspect a plug in adapter like that will turn into the least of your problems! The APC line are well supported and definitely worth another look.
