SSD vs HDD

Hi,
is the paket processing slower with an hdd? (I write a lot of logfiles with squid/sarge usw…)
What advantages has an ssd (except boot time) ?
Greetings Tom.

I'm interested in this too, having just bought a 240GB SSD for a steal in the sales…
From what I've read, it makes Squid a lot more 'snappy' as an SSD can saturate a gigabit connection to multiple machines (400MB/s + read speed), whereas an HDD will only be able to saturate one gigabit connection at most (~125MB/s) -
Less power and no moving parts is nice. If you didn't have squid, I would safe an SSD is less likely to die.

I don't think Squid is working well at all in pfsense to be honest!

would you prefer to run it on a dedicatet vm? it can be the better way, i think. So you can join the server to the domain and use ntlm/kerberos authentication.
This is off topic, i know.

Not that off topic. Your firewall should be doing one thing, being a firewall, not some app server that runs a proxy. We may as well be discussing why you shouldn't play games and run all of your programs as root on your servers.

That could be placed inside of the DMZ.

Two of our PFSense box's have 3 X Samsung 850 Pro, and so far the performance is excellent for writing log files and other pcap data.

Did you got TRIM support working on them in pfSense? Or did they run without TRIM support?

Would be interesting to know if TRI works with pfsense on the 850 PRO SSDs, as mine with 850 EVO apparently do not…
