Spamd - says it started, but then says not running

This may be quite simply that the spamd package (4.8.0) says it's for 1.2.1 and I'm running 2.0.3 - it may just not work?
Installed without complaint, configured as best I could with the GUI (I have no mailserver here, so a GUI checkbox for "tarpit-only mode" would be handy, tied to various settings appropriate for that use.)
It claims to have started. But dashboard says it's not running. Indeed, the page where the banner says it's been started reports it as stopped further down the page.
Nothing at all in the package log for spamd, and nothing enlightening in the system log.
