Cannot get nic to show up in interfaces
-
I am very new to pfsense but wanted to try and replace my router with an old home PC, i purchased one of the older intel nics from ebay, a 4 port intel ET PCI-E adapter, installed pfsense, and I see the built on realtek nic but none of the other 4 ports as options. It is the newest version of pfsense. Do i need to find a driver for this? I thought it would already have it based on other posts about people saying this is best nic to get for the money (50$). I also do not have Web GUI access because I only have the single nic assigned to WAN from modem right now, and I do not have any way to connect any other machine to this without getting the nic to work to plug in my desktop. please help!
I have also tested the NIC in my windows 10 machine and it is working
-
Configure the working interface as LAN and forget WAN for the moment, that way you will be able to access the WebConfigurator to see the log files.
-
I am trying to set up my system for LAN and ignore WAN but I might be doing this wrong because I cannot find the option anywhere.
From main "menu" in console. I choose 1) assign interfaces
It then shows my one built in nic as the only valid interface, and asks do you want to set up VLANs first? if I select yes it will go through a VLAN setup, if i select no it will go straight to setting up my WAN, and even if i do select yes and set up a VLAN on that only nic, it will still want me to set up a WAN on the same nic after i finish the process. what option am I missing to set up the LAN only to access the web gui?
-
I did a factory reset and I think the problem that I am having is that I am looping in between my assignment of NICs because pfsense will ask me for which NIC to use for WAN, and does not give me a skip option, so I must use my built on NIC, then it asks me for my LAN, which I then put in my built on NIC again, and it loops non stop, until I just ignore the LAN option, because it lets me skip the LAN by hitting enter with it blank, but does not work for the WAN. very frustrating =[
-
I got into the web gui by assigning my pfsense WAN to the only port with no LAN, connecting it to my current crappy router, and in my router settings found the IP for this pfsense box and connecting to it, now what logs are needed or what info to find out why this other 4 port nic is not showing up?
-
I saw other alike issues have people post their dmesg…. not sure if thats what is needed, here is mine
looking through it, especially near my other built on nic, bge0, and searching for intel, I do not see anything related to my nic at all on here, which makes me think the pci slot might be bad? the card works on my other pc just for connection, but when it is plugged in it has power and if i run an ethernet from one slot to another pc it lights up, so it is receiving power from the motherboard.

You should put your logs inside # [ code][ /code] (no space " " inside the [])
From this boot it doesn't seems it recognize your NIC, maybe try another PCIe slot, or try just booting the psense LIVECD on you other computer to see if it recognize the NIC on another motherboard.
Also seach the forum with you NIC Model to see if someone else use it on pfsense.
On the Wiki there is a list of supported hardware.
