Got called in tonight on an emergency repair job. A clients tugboat lost the bendix gear on one of their engines starters. I went down into the hole and the crew had the old started pulled out already. Turns out the benix shaft was broke and its not fixable so we had to install new one from the ships spares. The crew was the lead and had tried to install the starter and had it up, but the 2" pipe airline flanges were in a different spot and we had to repipe it. Went to do a starter test spin-up and it turns out they put the wrong starter on –as they spin counter-rotating shafts and engines. So had to put the right one on and replumb it again as the air port was in another spot. Then had to rig some additional airlines as the new starters use 1/4 airline to engage the bendix gear and a return line to pull it back..
Me and a welder lead had the boat gone in 3 hours with the crews help..

Exciting Saturday night. At least the work was appreciated. They had dinner ready for us upon completion. Nice Jamaican crew.

          Crux of the story.

Don't answer the phone if your not ready to go in the pit.

I usually work in a comfortable shop comparatively.

Part of the perils of being an Inside Machinist is you can do Outside Machinist work by nature.

What cracks me up is the amount of people who have engineer in thier title but should not. We have a NDT guy who is an Weld Engineer(non-degree'd)

            MY FIRST ARCH-XFCE4-NETWORKMANAGER-SEAMONKEY POST!!

And I always thought that Engineers drive trains.

Funny you say that. EMD 's are actually Train engines at root. Starter by 55 gal drum.

Whats the deal. I can't even make small talk without you dogging me? To be a community you have to treat people with respect.

I know FreeBSD seems to breed abusers but I thought this forum was different.

I hope you are joking. The first rule of the internet is "lolwut?".

I am pretty sure I nailed that. /sarcasm

In all seriousness though, I have been experimenting with different religions aside from pfSense, and I was somewhat surprised to find that the community was hugely important to me (Ubiquiti vs Mikrotik). I recently PMed a pfSense top-man expressing my interest in supporting some sort of contest or reward for the more helpful forum members, hoping that it would increase the amount of comraderie around here but I got no response (I am a social tuckfard, so the lack of response is unsurprising).

I dunno. People (assumedly like me) would be over-joyed and probably encouraged ro participate when seeing people like Derelict, KOM, sideout, etc given some sort of accolades for their self-less helpfulness around here.

These forums/users are too important to pfSense to be ignored by the business end of pfSense.

Sorry. It is crazy snowy/icy/dangerous in NorthEast Georgia (USA) today, and I suspect that the dangerous driving conditions may have left a lingering effect on me that is influencing this post.

Please correct any obvious misinformation in my posts.

I really don't think Chris had any ill intent, seemed a harmless sarcastic remark to me, though slightly out of line - any topic is welcome on the general discussion board without snide remarks in response. I've enjoyed the OT stuff.

I've met Chris in person at a couple conferences and spent some time with him, among a variety of email and phone conversations over the years, so I probably read it differently than someone who has no idea who he is, because I know him to be someone who wouldn't have any ill intent towards anyone.

I strongly disagree with that too. Every open source community unfortunately has some abusive members, but having been to a slew of BSD conferences over the years, a number of FreeBSD developer summits, "breed abusers" is worlds away from the reality.

I replied back in the other thread too, but you're certainly welcome back should you decide to return, Phishfry.

Anyone else who feels unwelcome for any reason, please report abusive posts, and/or PM me before deciding to delete your account.

I don't want to re-fuel this thread, just like to say "Thanks!" to cmb/Chris for his statement.

Of course my reply was meant in a funny way - I was laughing when I wrote it. Just imagine a smiley at the end of the line and it gets clear.
Otherwise I would have ignored the post and gone away silently.
