      @bluepr0:

      Woha! How is this one {mikrotik} so cheap?!

      There is no free lunch. You get what you pay for.

      @thadrumr:

      I have used a lot of the Mikrotik Products

      Where are you from? In Europe they aren't particularly known as switch manufacturer. Just one of the zillion prosumer brands.

      @BillBraskey:

      Keep an open mind.

      As always!

      HP not being on this list just means there's nobody in this forum using them (or dare to write about it).

      I've used (in alphabetical order…)
      -3Com
      -Accton
      -Allied Telesys
      -Cisco
      -Edge-corE
      -Extreme Networks
      -HP
      -KTI/Katron
      -LevelOne
      -Linksys
      -Longshine
      -(Netgear)
      -SMC
      -TrendNet
      switches in the past. I would assume I'm quite open minded. But does this list tell you something?
      Once you use a CLI more often, you start build a preference with one brand and stick to that.

      I had a two day training on Edge-corE switches, which by itself was great. But it doesn't mean that I still use their gear.

        I use the Ubiquiti EdgeSwitch 24 Lite at home, it's fanless but the SFP's only support 1gbit

            The smallest switch with 10Gb ports I currently know is from D-Link DGS-1510-20

              Netgear XS708E
              8 x 100/1000/10000 MBit/s  + 1 SFP+
              Netgear XS712T
              12 x 100/1000/10000 MBit/s  + 2 SFP+

              So you get GBit/s, GbE and SFP+ Ports as you want it.

                One thing worth considering is the web configuration page of device. I am a big fan of the older Linksys-Cisco SG300 seriers but the fact that it requires Internet Explorer is a serious drawback. I have to keep an XP box just to administer them.

                Any reports on the D-Link DGS-1510 devices browser requirments? I like the specs on that device. Almost too good for the money!

                  IE, Opera and Seamonkey are running well to administer the switch without no problems!

                    Huh??  I have a sg300-10, and can just use the cli to admin them.. But sure if you want to use a gui, I use firefox 43.0.4 just fine with them - haven't used IE in quite some time on anything.  But I do have a old netgear gs108t that firefox is buggy with, and have to use IE for that.

                    But the sg300 I have used firefox, chrome without any issues - but I don't know of anything you can not just do through the cli via ssh or telnet even.  And they even come with a console port you could use..

                        I was speaking about the Linksys SRW line which Cisco bought. It would only work with Internet Explorer. It became the SG300 Line.

                          Man, that's last millennium or so. You can't really compare those to current SG300, fortunately!
                          I had one of those and they were horrible. The "CLI" was more like a click-through ASCII menu, nowhere could you use a command line.
                          Linksys is now owned by Belkin and I don't know how much of the original SRW-code is still in the SG series. Can't be much.

                            didn't those crappy SRW all go end of life like mid 2010 or something.. the SG line is nothing like those at all..  I think the confusion came with the SRW used as the model number SRW2008-K9-NA..

                                  I have one of those. They have CLI, but not official. You telnet or ssh to the box, login and then press Ctrl-Z, then you enter lcli (login again) and have something that looks much like Cisco IOS:

                                  backbone# conf
                                  backbone(config)# int eth g1

                                  The Web Frontend indeed requires Internet Explorer (in compatibility mode) including (I think) ActiveX.

                                    TP-Link smart switches also have cli, which looks very much like Cisco's IOS.

                                        Those (in the cited Netgear switches) are SFP+ ports (10Gb!). That's still expensive technology slowly reaching consumer price ranges.

                                        Did you look at the D-Link DGS-1510-20 mentioned before?

                                          I'm liking those Ubiquiti Edge switches. Good looking with SFP+ option on the 48 port switch!

                                          Good thread you guys have going here!

                                          I personally went and grabbed a Quanta LB4M off eBay because it was affordable and thought I'd toy with it and if it doesn't work out I'm not out much.
                                          http://www.ebay.com/itm/Refurbished-Quanta-LB4M-10GB-Uplink-Switch-Dual-Power-Supplies-90-Day-Warranty-/171981132995?hash=item280adfd4c3:g:5wgAAOSwYIhWiuLZ

                                          But if that doesn't work out I'm seriously thinking I'll grab one of those Ubiquiti switches. I've come to enjoy their products.

                                            …Quanta LB4M...

                                            From the amount of fans on the back I assume it to be quite noisy and to consume an amount of power that hardly justifies the cheap price as compared to power costs over uptime. Over here in Germany electricity is expensive. YMMV.
