      Howdy,
I noticed that with our SG-2440 all of the SMART diagnostics come back with the following text.

      smartctl 6.4 2015-06-04 r4109 [FreeBSD 10.1-RELEASE-p25 amd64] (local build)
Copyright (C) 2002-15, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org

      /dev/da0: Unknown USB bridge [0x0424:0x2240 (0x198)]
Please specify device type with the -d option.

Use smartctl -h to get a usage summary

      Thoughts?

For which device you need S.M.A.R.T. is here the question, and yes not for all devices S.M.A.R.T. will be a real
gain, the Samsung840 SSD drives from Samsung are not compatible with S.M.A.R.T. as I know it right. What
kind and brand of storage device you are trying to proof with S.M.A.R.T. here in this case?

        /dev/da0: Unknown USB bridge [0x0424:0x2240 (0x198)[/quote]
Is this perhaps the internal eMMC storage from the SG-2440 unit that is connected via USB and also
        not S.M.A.R.T. capable?

I dont have any extra storage on this device besides the built-in flash so this is more than likely part of it.

I suppose I guessed I wouldnt see an unknown USB bridge message, and instead maybe no supported SMART devices message.

So it could be only the internal eMMC storage that we are talking about.

I suppose I guessed I wouldn't see an unknown USB bridge message, and instead maybe no supported SMART devices message.

If so it would be nice if then someone from the pfSense team is telling you more and exactly what you have to
do, because I really don´t know if the internal eMMC storage is S.M.A.R.T capable

I would try adding '-d sat' to your smartctl command.  I use this to query the SMART data on my USB external hard drives.

My command (under Linux) is something like:

              smartctl -a -d sat /dev/sdg

There are other types you can pass with '-d', but this is the only one that's ever worked for me.
