I am getting an i3 2100 for free for a friend and want to replace my old E6600 that I am currently using. I will need a motherboard, and I want something affordable, that preferably has an Intel NIC (not sure if that exists on the chipsets that support that the i3 2100). I will be using a 2U server chassis that supports Micro ATX. Does anybody know of anything that could be had for a decent price? Including the used market? Or does anybody know of a reference guide that indicates which NIC is used? Even on the manufacturer's website it's not always available, but from what I have gathered, the most common is the Realtek NICs, which are not ideal (from what I understand, I have no real frame of reference, other than the week that I have been using PFsense.)

Thanks for the input. Is ECC Ram required? I thought you could run non-ECC ram in ECC Ram motherboards?

Some motherboards will accept both ECC and non-ECC RAM, but in my experience, this is the exception rather than the rule.

Looking at the manual and website for this motherboard, you'll need ECC RAM.

The i3-2100 has 2 cores and neither AES-NI nor Quick Assist Technology which are pFSense optimized features.

I know free is good perhaps considering a different CPU would be a better option. Just a suggestion.

Do not be afraid to fail.
