VPN - can I do this with pfSense
-
Hi,
This is more of a "Can I do this…." rather than "How do I..." question. That may come later!
We have a pfsense firewall here, and one of our clients wants us to connect to their server via PPTP VPN. So I have setup a windows software VPN on my PC and it works fine - I can ping their server on 192.168.50.1. We are on 192.168.0.0 The question is, can I set our pfsense so that if anyone pings or otherwise tries to access 192.168.50.x, the firewall initiates a VPN so that anyone on the LAN can then see the remote network?
thanks

No, you can't. PPTP is no longer supported for many good reasons. Use IPSec or OpenVPN for something reliable and secure.

OK thanks for the answer. Assuming I can get them to setup a different kind of VPN at their end, it is possible to have an "on demand" VPN as I describe or would it have to be permanently connected?

Yes, IPSec or OpenVPN would connect when there was traffic to the remote site.
