PFSense working great on a ChromeBox m004u w/USB 3.0 gig ethernet

Woah fascinating stuff, SpeederA. I look forward to your next post. :)
ARGH!! Response lost to a logout, >:(
Will write it again later…@lra:
@SpeederA Could you kindly give a brief outline of the steps you performed to get the ChromeBox m004u to boot pfSense (RW_LEGACY upgrade ?). Text is fine.
Is the internal NIC PCIe connected ? Is it a Broadcom BCM57… ?
While many of us are not enamored with USB NIC's, a $150 router-on-a-stick can be very useful for certain situations.

Isn't the ASUS ChromeBox m004u basically an Intel NUC?

Yes except that it comes with memory and SSD installed. You also have to run a hacked BIOS to boot anything other than the Chrome OS. Plenty of users on the Plex forums run them for Plex clients.
You could achieve the same thing by picking up a Intel NUC NUC5CPYH and add memory and SSD with fewer hassles but it will end up costing a little bit more money in the end.

HAHA!!! ;D
That's awesome! Could be very handy in a pinch or where one needs some portability plus it has it's own built in battery!!Note that this is chromebox (no battery), but you can probably do the samething with a chromebook that shared same components…

I tried installing pfsense (2.2.6) on my NUC5PPYH (same as NUC5CPYH except for a better CPU), but it couldn't recognize wired or wireless interface. Google showed this may be supported in 10.3 freebsd, so future pfsense releases is a real possibility. My NUC consumes a little less power (10W vs 15W) compared to my ASUS chromebox.

The pfSense 2.3 beta is based on FreeBSD 10.3 PreRelease, and will probably switch to Release when it hits that point. So if you wanted to test with 10.3, you can.

Ahh! Good to know. I don't do much with anything Chrome I don't really like the lack of functionality, so good to know!

Thank you. I tried memstick image but there is no LiveCD option. I ended up using embedded flavor, and it did detect the NIC. For now, I am using my chromebox. When 2.3 gets released, I will switch to my NUC. Thank you for the information.

Sorry I went AWOL guys.
Been a little busy….Box is still running, although I've had to reset it do to hang twice in 4 months...
Throughput has been a little constrained as well as of late (~60mb on a 100mb connection)
Haven't had time to troubleshoot yet. Will be updating on this sometime later this month!

I ahve the NUC model that you are refering to and its not working with 2.2.6 release so will try the 2.3 and advise it has a Realtek NIC which appears to be an issue with the BSD version so will be interesting to see if 2.3 fixes this will advise

NUC (NUC5CPYH or 5PPYH) should work with pfsense 2.3 beta. Try it out!

Mine is running 2.3 beta (it ran 2.2.6 before), and I never had to reset it but I don't use USB ethernet though. (I use VLANs with a managed switch)
